About Destroyers

Destroyers are fast, maneuverable, and long-endurance naval vessels designed to escort larger ships in a fleet, convoy, or battle group, and defend them against smaller, short-range attackers. Originally developed in the late 19th century to counter the threat of torpedo boats, destroyers have evolved into some of the most versatile and essential warships in modern naval warfare. By World War II, destroyers played critical roles in anti-submarine warfare, surface combat, and air defense. Equipped with torpedoes, naval guns, sonar, depth charges, and increasingly advanced missile systems, modern destroyers can operate independently or as part of carrier strike groups. Their missions include maritime security, offensive strikes, missile defense, and surveillance. The U.S. Navy’s Arleigh Burke-class destroyers, for example, are equipped with the Aegis Combat System, capable of tracking and intercepting airborne threats including ballistic missiles. Destroyers also provide command and control capabilities and often serve as flagships in smaller naval task forces. They are essential for power projection, sea control, and defending freedom of navigation in contested waters. With their speed, firepower, and adaptability, destroyers continue to be a cornerstone of naval strategy around the world.
