Kiss Lori for Me

On Valentine's Day 1968, Kilo Company left the safety of the Ca Lu Combat Base on orders to complete a combat patrol mission. Ten Marines and their Senior Corpsman lost their lives in battle that day. The government declared my father, HM2 Larry Jo Goss, Missing in Action. While his deceased body lay in the humid jungle for twenty-one days, his wife Marty, maintained hope that her loving husband was still alive. Government telegrams updated her on the "search" which indicated that her Larry might have been taken by hostile forces. Marty prayed in agony that this was not true and that God would help them find her husband so he could be safely in her arms once again. She and their six-month-old daughter, Lori Jo, needed him desperately. In a time of uncertainty, Marty's faith was strong.In Vietnam, Larry's comrades from Kilo 3/9 knew he was not missing. His body, along with the remains of nine Marines, were still on the hill they deemed "Valentine's Ridge." From their combat base located in Ca Lu they could see the smoke cascade from the napalm dropped too late. An air strike could have prevented the casualties. Leaving their brothers behind was not their only regret.
