About Great Northern War

The Great Northern War (1700–1721) was a major conflict in Northern and Eastern Europe that fundamentally shifted the balance of power in the region. The war saw a coalition led by Tsarist Russia, Denmark-Norway, and Saxony-Poland challenge the Swedish Empire, which at the time was a dominant military force. The war began when the anti-Swedish alliance launched attacks to reclaim territory and curb Swedish influence. Charles XII of Sweden initially had stunning military successes, notably defeating the Russians at the Battle of Narva. However, the tide turned with the disastrous Swedish invasion of Russia, culminating in the pivotal Battle of Poltava in 1709, where Peter the Great's modernized army crushed Swedish forces. The conflict dragged on for over two decades, involving battles across the Baltic region, Ukraine, and Scandinavia. The Treaty of Nystad in 1721 marked Russia's emergence as a great power, granting it significant territory in the Baltics. Sweden’s imperial decline was cemented, and the war also accelerated military reforms and state centralization in Russia. The Great Northern War reshaped Northern European geopolitics and signaled the rise of Russia as a major player on the European stage.
