About Spanish Civil War
The Spanish Civil War (1936–1939) was a defining ideological conflict of the 20th century, pitting the democratically elected Republican government against a Nationalist insurgency led by General Francisco Franco. Rooted in deep political, social, and economic divisions, the war erupted after a failed military coup against the Spanish Republic. The Republicans were a diverse coalition of socialists, communists, anarchists, and liberals, while the Nationalists consisted of monarchists, conservatives, fascists, and elements of the Catholic Church. The conflict drew international attention and involvement: Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy provided troops, aircraft, and weapons to Franco, while the Soviet Union supported the Republicans. Volunteers from around the world, including the famous International Brigades, fought on the Republican side. The war was characterized by brutal fighting, widespread atrocities, bombings of civilian populations (like the bombing of Guernica), and fierce repression on both sides. Franco's forces gained the upper hand by 1939, capturing Madrid and establishing a dictatorship that would last until his death in 1975. The Spanish Civil War served as a testing ground for World War II tactics and technologies and revealed the international community’s failure to effectively confront rising fascism. The war left Spain devastated, with hundreds of thousands dead and the country isolated for decades under Franco’s authoritarian rule. Its memory continues to divide Spanish society and remains a powerful symbol of ideological struggle, civil strife, and the global polarization of the 20th century.
