About World War II

World War II (1939–1945) was the most destructive and far-reaching conflict in human history, involving over 100 million people from more than 30 countries. Sparked by Nazi Germany’s invasion of Poland in 1939, the war rapidly expanded as Adolf Hitler’s aggressive expansionism triggered a global response. The Axis Powers—Germany, Italy, and Japan—faced off against the Allies, which included the United Kingdom, Soviet Union, United States, China, and many others. The war featured massive land battles, naval confrontations, and aerial bombings across Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Pacific. Notable campaigns included the Battle of Britain, Operation Barbarossa, D-Day, the Pacific Island-hopping campaign, and the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It witnessed atrocities on an unprecedented scale, most horrifically the Holocaust, in which six million Jews were systematically murdered. The war ended with unconditional Axis surrenders in 1945—Germany in May and Japan in August. The consequences were staggering: over 70 million people died, many of them civilians. The war resulted in the division of Germany, the occupation of Japan, the founding of the United Nations, and the beginning of the Cold War. It also accelerated decolonization and redefined international law, warfare, and human rights. World War II reshaped the modern world, leaving a legacy that continues to influence geopolitics, memory, and collective identity across the globe.
