The Iraq War, which began in 2003, was a major military conflict that resulted from a U.S.-led invasion aimed at overthrowing the regime of Saddam Hussein. Justified by concerns over weapons of mass destruction (which were never found), the war quickly turned into a prolonged occupation and insurgency. The conflict saw intense urban combat, sectarian violence, and the emergence of extremist groups, including ISIS. Efforts to rebuild Iraq were hampered by political instability, corruption, and ongoing security threats. The war officially ended in 2011 with the withdrawal of U.S. troops, but its long-term effects continue to shape regional geopolitics, affecting Iraq’s governance, economy, and security landscape.
